A New Generation of DotA

What could possibly follow up to the original classic, DotA? More DotA!

After the huge success of a WarCraft 3 mod, DotA (Defence of the Ancients), many game companies put forward their own Action RTS in hopes of emulating the success of what was simply a game made by players for player. Gas Powered Games gave us Demigod, Riot created League of Legends, and S2 Games released Heroes of Newerth. These stand-alone, DotA inspired games were played and enjoyed by the masses but many could not forget their love for the little mod-that-could that started it all.

(See what i mean?)

On October 13th, 2010, Valve Corporation announced its official entry to the genre with a sequel to DotA entitled Dota 2. This sent a wave of excitement through not just original DotA players but all the new genre fans that had started on LoL or HoN but knew of the origins of those games.

In two days, on August 17th, Valve will show DotA 2 publicly for the first time, but not through the traditional press release or short demo at a Con.  Instead, a full scale grand tournament spanning four days, and featuring the best original DotA teams from around the world playing at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany for a prize of one million dollars. To add to the excitement Valve today also released the Official Gamescom DotA 2 Trailer.
