American Netflix customers prefer their PC

Million's of viewers have a choice when it comes to how they play their Netflix, what do you use?

Netflix, the popular american media rental company has been making the move to streaming over the internet and in doing so, has been coming into our homes through a vast number of possibilities.  In the past getting media through a new venue always meant new machines, new hardware and at the very least a number of new cables.  Now although you can purchase new devices specific for Netflix, the reality is that most households already own a player.  It could be your PC, your gaming console, appleTV, boxee box and the list goes on.  So the question in the United States was, what was the most popular way to view your favourite TV shows and movies?  The Nielsen reports came out for the Spring of 2011 and it seems PC is the obvious winner.  Here are some numbers for you;

  • 42% Directly On Computer
  • 25% Wii
  • 14% Connection Computer To TV
  • 13% PS3
  • 12% XBOX LIVE
  • 11% Internet Connected Blu-Ray Player
  • 6% Internet Enabled TV
  • 5% Roku Box
  • 3% On Mobile Phone
  • 3% On iPad
  • 2% TiVo with Netflix Access
  • 1% GoogleTV
  • 1% AppleTV

This was further interesting when compared to those who access HULU, as 89% of their customers were connected Directly on Computer.  How ever you watch it, direct streaming media is certainly replacing the standard methods of  purchasing the hardware be it a retail box store, or video rental store.  If you are a fan of owning box sets, then this change will upset you.  For someone like me who used to buy box sets,  appreciates now having a lot more space on my shelf and in my rooms, is a huge fan and while doing this article is watching “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid” for the first time in my life, I say Netflix and other similar methods of streaming media, thank you.
