Counter-Strike Global Offensive 2012

12 years appears to be the magic number for classic games to return...

In 1999 Counter-Strike (a mod of Half-Life) started spreading across the PC gaming scene, a first person shooter that would change the way we played.  Created by Jess Cliffe and Minh “Gooseman” Le, it gave players a chance to play Terrorists vs. Counter-Terrorists.  If you were on the CT team you either would protect a location from bombers, or you would storm the front to rescue hostages within a certain period of time.  As Terrorists it was easy, keep the hostages till time runs out, or plant the bomb and survive an explosion.

From the original maps of de_dust, cs_office, de_aztec, and so many more the game quickly grew and expanded.  It spent 6 months in a constant form of beta, with servers and individual players grabbing new copies as version after version increased the quality of game control, what could be done with the maps and overall… fun factor.  What made this game such an addiction that millions would play it day and night?  The simple equation was that it was easy to mod the maps, options, controls and more.  As well besides having the personal touch with the ability to make your own “spray’s” to mark your territory.  The maps were only 30 minutes, and each round was generally 3-5 minutes in length.  This meant that the second you were bored cause you got picked first in a rush, or your team mate left you to dry in a cloud of friendly fire, you only had a few minutes of watching others on the map before it was “GO GO GO!!!”

CS came out in retail form in 2000 on the PC by Sierra Studios and has since been purchased Valve Software and is easily purchased and played through STEAM.  In 2004, CS moved from keyboard and mouse over to the world of gaming controllers on the XBOX.  All the while CS to this day is still being played on computers world wide, in daily online and LAN tournaments and has helped move Le and Cliffe into the top 15 of all time game creators.  So now here we are, 7 years later, and Valve makes comment that in 2012 Counter-Strike will be back again.

Counter-Strike : Global Offensive (CS:GO) will see many updates to the classics from characters, maps and weapons.  There will be some updates of the original maps, and the focus will be all about expanding the team-based gameplay.  There is still a while till an official date is set, screenshots, video’s and more but I personally cannot wait.  Stay tuned for more, until then, GL, HF.
