Penny Arcade Expo is down to only mere hours away and everyone is charged up for an event that should be like none before. Celebrities, Creators, Players and Fans alike will be travelling to Seattle, Washington to envelop the world of gaming and geek culture in a home that Gabe, Tycho, and Khoo created for all of us to play in. While everyone is gearing up for panels, demos, previews and more, I want to be the one to take a moment of silence before we pop the cork.
This years event is a week before the 2010 convention, but still the name marks an anniversary on things to consider. First of the two is H1N1, or known amongst the gamers as H1N3RD1. An individual who knew they had the virus decided to put everyone else at risk in 2009, rather then miss the event. So what did we learn from this nasty turn of events? (yes I was one of the many who became infected) Keep in mind that you are traveling around thousands of others doing the same thing that you are, touching doors, controllers, shaking hands and such, why not start by doing what Jerry does?
- Use your elbows to say hello (like a Penny Arcade Fist Bump)
- Wash your hands often
- Bring anti-bacterial lotion
- Avoid touching your face at all times
- Hygiene, remember it is not just a fun word to say, it is a great thing to be
The second subject is one that was taken very personal by myself, Good Game Media, and in fact the gaming community world wide. On the way to PAX 2010, near Widbey Island, there was a car accident involving Brian Woods, and his six month pregnant wife Erin. As the car came towards them, Brian maneuvered the car so that he took the majority of the impact and saving the lives of his family… he was not as fortunate. At the time he was a Senior Designer on the franchise “Company of Heroes”, and a member of Relic Games in Vancouver, BC.
Word of the event quickly spread around the convention, and though the show must go on, when PAX 2010 came to a close the gaming community came together in many ways to celebrate the life of Brian Woods, and do what they could to support his family. A memorial foundation was built and Good Game Media decided it (along with Child’s Play Charity) was a great cause to raise money for.
So now here we are on the eve of an event that is known as EPIC, GRAND and simply put, N3RDT4STIC… but that all depends on you. The stage is set for all to enjoy, and we hope you are able to take it in, play the games you are waiting for, get a chance to say thank you to all your favorite game designers but before you head off take a moment, plan your route, make sure it is a safe weekend, make the right choices, and come back so we can all hear your comments, thoughts and pictures of what made PAX 2011 the best convention ever.
